Classic two-panel sumi-e screen painting depicting the temple guardians of the North and South, by Kano Eicho (1827-1899).
Also known by the name Tanaka Sanrai, Kano Eicho is the son of Kano Eigaku, the 9th generation in direct descendancy to Kano Sanraku (1559-1635). The Kano School was the dominant style of painting in Japan from the late 16th c. to the Meiji Period (1868).
Original framing, mounted on gorgeously oxidized silver leaf. Signed San Rai.
