Shimaoka Tatsuzo Cube Hanaire


Designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government in 1963, Shimaoka distilled 5000 years of pottery making in Japan into something completely unique. Along with Hamada Shoji and Kawai Kanjiro, he was a member of the Mingei Movement of art and philosophy of the early 20th century.


Shimaoka's work is represented in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others.
