Designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government in 1955, Hamada was a founder of the Mingei Movement of art and philosophy in the early 20th c. along with Yanagi Soetsu and Kawai Kanjiro, which was to have a significant impact on the Japanese art world. In 1968, he became only the third potter to be awarded the prestigious Order of Culture.
